Decisions on Capex and Opex are not usually mutually exclusive. Assets (Capex) normally require regular maintenance, repairs and consumable items (Opex) to operate over the assets economic life. Depending on the asset type, operating expenditure can be many multiples of the capital cost of the asset over its economic life.

A capital item which seems expensive today can actually provide the lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) if Opex items such as maintenance, parts and consumable costs are lower than other alternatives being considered.
